What is 3D Printing?

3D printing, or additive manufacturing, is way of converting computer models into physical objects. A 3D printer slowly deposits several layers of plastic onto a surface, building an object from the ground up. 3D printing is commonly used in engineering to quickly design prototypes and develop products. The video below shows a timelapse of a 3D printer in action.

What is a cricut?

A Cricut is an automatic cutting machine. Combined with conventional paper printers and textile tools, cricuts allow people to create a variety of objects from custom home decor and graphic clothing, to stickers and mechanical inking on paper. The video below shows a timelapse of a Cricut in action.

What is your pricing?

That would depend on what you want made! Every project is unique and requires a different amount of time and material. Fill out our contact/estimate form and we can give you a good idea of it would cost to make your idea a reality!

Where can I find models for printing Online?

Models can be found all over the internet! There are a few good sites to stick too, though:

  • Thingiverse.com

  • Printables.com

  • Thangs.com

  • Heroforge.com (for custom DND Minis)

What if I can't find a model that I like, or I have a specific object I want replicated?

We can design or scan it for you! Mike, half of the husband and wife duo that runs this site, is a professional engineer with almost 10 years of Computer Design and Modelling Experience. We also have experience in photogrammetry based 3D scanning of real-world objects.

What all can you Do?

We have a variety of skills and expereince, which include:

  • 3D Printing and Post Processing

  • Painting

  • Digital Art and Graphic Design

  • 3D Modelling and CAD

  • Papercraft (card making)

  • Custom sticker and label making

  • Custom designs on clothing and household decor

  • Digital Electronics

  • Soldering

  • Embroidery

We can do a lot! Though, like anyone, we have limits to some of our abilities. We'll be upfront during the quoting process about what we can and can't do.

What are 3D prints made of, are they strong?

3D prints can be made of a variety of different materials, though the most common are PLA, ABS, and PETG plastics. Materials an be specified during the estimate process.

The strength of a 3D print depends on several different factors: material (as mentioned above), internal structure, Design geometry, printing orientation, and printing resolution. Also, we are experienced hobbyists working with hobbyist grade tools and thus are subject to those limitations. Our creations are not suitable for heavy duty or industrial applications where part failure could result in damage to property or personal injury.

Are there any restrictions on what I can ask you to make?

Given the complicated nature of intellectual property laws, it is difficult create broad rules for what is, and is not, acceptable use of a design you may have found online or an object you'd like replicated and we're likely to handle that on a case-to-case basis. Luckily, the maker community is kind enough to open source much of their work or designs so anyone can use them: sites like Thingiverse even make it easy to see the distrubution and use rules associated with designs on their site. We, as From Mind to Made, do not keep stock of or advertise the sale of specific models that we ourselves have not made. We are a make on demand business. Our portfolio page is designed to show examples of our work and abilities, not advertise specific designs. We are a Maker service who aims to help our customers create or print designs they own or otherwise have permission to use.

That being said, we do have a couple of hard limits on Make requests. We will not print firearms or other functioning weapons. Cosplay or decorative elements that emulate fictitious weapons or are otherwise non-functional ARE permitted. While it is legal to print firearms in many areas of the United States, we are not prepared to take on the potential liability associated with such requests. We will also not draw or depict someone in phsyical or digital artwork without their explicit consent or, if a minor, the consent of a parent or guardian. We will not draw, print, or depict sexually explicit material or models.
